Make Me Great Again
Under the title “Make Me Great Again”, I am working on a series of portraits of politicians and public figures, who can be seen as representatives of populism, a political and social ideology that is gaining increasing ground.
I chose Donald Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” as a starting point to interpret and visualize this movement.
The portraits are constructions made from interconnected pipes. These “portrait structures” are combined with semi-abstract drawings in which similar pipe constructions play with perspective and spatiality. Through these (construction) drawings, I attempt to visualize the longing evoked by the slogan “Make America Great Again.”
By adapting the forementioned slogan to “Make Me Great Again,” the political becomes personal. What this pursuit of greatness entails for these politicians—and in what form it should manifest—is a question i hope the viewer may ponder about. Maybe the longing expressed by this slogan resonates with the viewer itself and raises the question: what makes me great?
Make me great again is a work in progress and will grow analogue to the growth of populism itself. These portraits are not meant to make fun of these advocates for populism but to question it’s core believes and values.
